A release from Gallia County Jail means that the sheriff's custody ended. It does not always mean the person entered the community. Bond or recognizance can return a person to the community while a case remains open. A completed local sentence or a court-ordered release can also end the jail stay. A state-prison commitment, extradition, out-of-county pickup, or immigration detainer moves the person into another custodian's control.

A VINE release notice can still describe a transfer from Gallia custody to another agency. Request Gallia Jail Release Records

Identify the full name, known aliases, date of birth if known, approximate booking and release dates, and Jail ID or SID if available. Ohio Revised Code 149.43 governs responsive public records and requires legal authority for a denial. Gallia County Jail Custody
Gallia County Jail is the county's only documented full-service jail. It houses men and women and can hold people whose arrest or court case belongs to another county. The JDS roster has included Lawrence County cases, and Gallia commissioner minutes document an intercounty housing agreement. Being held in the Gallia jail and being charged in Gallia County are therefore different facts.
The jail is not an ODRC prison. A Common Pleas state-prison sentence moves the person into ODRC custody at an institution elsewhere in Ohio. There is also no official evidence of a federal prison or ICE detention center in Gallia County. Federal or immigration involvement is a conditional transfer path, not a description of ordinary jail operations.
The public JDS record exposes Jail ID, booking photograph, name, charge-level court and disposition, bail, SID, booking date, attorney, next court date, arresting agency, and Release Date. It does not show exit time, release reason, destination, or receiving agency. Those gaps are why the official release transaction remains the core record.
For a Municipal Court matter, the official online search warns that data can lag by at least 24 hours and perhaps longer. If the case is bound over as a felony, continue into Common Pleas and match the docket number. Why Gallia Roster Absence Misleads
Gallia's custody layout makes roster absence unusually weak release proof. The county has one full-service jail, documented short-term Gallipolis holding cells, and a history of out-of-county overflow. The official systems-mapping report described limited local capacity, while the current roster and county minutes show that cross-county custody can run in both directions.
A person may leave police holding before any ordinary JDS entry appears. Another person may leave the Gallia jail for an ODRC institution, a different county, extradition, or another authority. Historical planning documents mentioned some southern Ohio placements, but those examples are not a current contract list. Ask the arresting agency or jail which custodian accepted the person.

Gallia Jail Property After Release
Gallia's inmate handbook supplies a second physical trail for the end of custody. Original incoming mail is scanned for viewing and held with personal property. On release, transport, or extradition, remaining property is returned against a signature. Uncollected property must be picked up within fourteen days.
An authorized third party may use the property window Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A written, detailed complaint about returned property receives a response within 72 hours, excluding weekends and holidays. Commissary balances, minus fees, are returned on a debit card. These records can corroborate an exit, but they do not replace the release log or state where the person went.
